Frequentis AG, headquartered in Vienna, is a leading international  provider of communication and information systems for safety-critical control centres. Since its foundation in 1947, the company has been developing highly specialised solutions for air traffic control, public  safety, rail and maritime transport, and military applications. Control  centres in over 150 countries worldwide rely on technology from Vienna;  precision, reliability and durability are core values. This ethos is  also reflected in the Vienna offices: Kugelgarn® textile flooring has been in place there since 2005 and remains virtually unchanged across some 14,000 m² to this day.

A complete redesign, but a floor that stays

As part of a renovation of the office space, numerous interior design elements were updated: furniture, room layouts and usage concepts were  adapted to modern working practices. The floor was a deliberate exception: even after almost 20 years of intensive use, the existing  Kugelgarn® showed no functional defects whatsoever – robust, well-maintained and fully operational.

Only a section of around 100 m² was redesigned. The aim was to create a modern, flexible office and meeting zone: a networking area that offers space for interaction, but also allows for quiet retreat, focused work and informal meetings.

Kugelgarn® Symphonie – timeless down to the last detail

Frequentis had originally opted for the Kugelgarn® Symphonie collection in a dark finish, a range featuring a particularly fine spherical structure, a calm appearance and high durability. These qualities have stood the test of time over two decades of everyday  office use.

Symphonie was used once again for the newly designed area, this time in a lighter variant, Kugelgarn® Symphonie marmor 756. The major advantage: thanks to the fine, uniform spherical structure, the new flooring blends seamlessly into the existing floor. Old and new appear harmoniously connected, with no visual breaks.

Checkerboard as a unifying design element

A special design idea came directly from Frequentis: in the transition areas between rooms, the dark Kugelgarn® laid long ago and the new, light Symphonie marmor were laid in a chequerboard pattern. This creates a subtle dialogue between the existing and the new – functional, clear and yet lively. The implementation was successfully carried out by CKK Supertisch GmbH.

All surfaces were laid in 50 × 50 cm modules on raised access floors from Lindner. This system allows for maximum flexibility: individual modules can be easily replaced, added to or modernised as required, fully in line with sustainable building use.

Durability as a principle of sustainability

The project at Frequentis impressively demonstrates what Kugelgarn® stands for:

Our collections are designed to be used for decades. Instead of replacing entire surfaces, individual areas can be refreshed or reinterpreted in a targeted manner, both functionally and aesthetically.

The fact that the Kugelgarn® Symphonie collection is still available today underlines its timeless character. It enables continuity across generations of interior design  concepts, thereby offering genuine added value for building owners and  users.
